A useful affiliate creator brief tells the creator what must be true while leaving room for an idea worth watching. It should be short enough to use during production and precise enough to settle questions about approval, compensation, and product claims.

Copy the structure below into your campaign document. Replace every placeholder before sending it. A brief is an operational reference; align it with the actual agreement rather than relying on it to resolve conflicting contract terms.

1. The audience and product problem

Template: “We want to reach [specific customer] who struggles with [problem]. Our product helps by [verified benefit]. The viewer should understand [one takeaway] after watching.”

Example: “We want to reach weekend travelers who overpack. Our compact bag has the dimensions and compartments shown in the attached specification. The viewer should understand how a small packing system fits into a short trip.”

Avoid asking one short video to communicate every feature, brand value, and offer condition.

2. The creative assignment

  • Deliverable: [format, duration range, aspect ratio, number of versions].
  • Placement: [creator channel, brand channel, or both].
  • Creative freedom: [tone, story and character choices the creator owns].
  • Required elements: [product detail, disclosure, CTA and destination].
  • References: [approved product assets and examples of the desired clarity].
  • Accessibility: [captions, readable on-screen text and any spoken explanation].

Reference examples should explain what you like about the execution. “Make it like this viral video” leaves too much uncertainty about copying, rights, and the actual communication goal.

3. Facts, boundaries and disclosures

List approved claims with their supporting source. Add a separate “do not say or imply” list. Include inaccurate comparisons, unsupported results, misleading personal experience, and features the product does not have.

State how commercial relationships and applicable AI content labels will be handled. Review current platform rules and the FTC’s influencer disclosure guidance for US-facing endorsements. The final content should make the relationship understandable where the audience encounters the endorsement.

4. Compensation and attribution

Write the production fee, commission rate and basis, qualifying purchases, attribution rules, excluded orders, return handling, payment timing, and any sample arrangements. Link to the full terms. Do not substitute “competitive commissions” for an actual offer.

For example, specify whether a commission applies to product revenue before or after discounts and whether taxes and shipping are excluded. See the commission structure guide for the questions to settle.

5. Rights and review process

Define where the brand may use the content, for how long, and whether paid ads, editing, or character use require separate permission. Record who owns or is authorized to license the character and source assets.

Set concept, draft, feedback, and final delivery dates. Name one approval contact. Define the included revision rounds and what happens when the brand changes the original scope. Require explicit approval before publication when the campaign calls for it.

6. The final handoff

Request the approved file, caption, disclosure, tracking destination, publication URL, and any agreed reporting. Test the link and checkout before the post goes live. Keep the approved version accessible to the creator and brand.

A strong brief should let both sides answer three questions: What are we making? What must remain accurate? How will we know the work is complete?
